Holiday stress can lead to depression

While most people are singing carols and wrapping gifts during the holidays, those who struggle with mental illness often feel increased pain and isolation. Terese Gessler knows, because she's been there.

"The bigness of it, how it comes across as being a very extreme holiday," said Gessler, 38, who was diagnosed with major depression and anxiety at age 14. "The stresses that go with it shopping, parties, family gatherings."

Although statistics show that suicides in Sheboygan County aren't higher than at other times of the year, mental health professionals and law enforcement officers in Sheboygan see the result of the increased stress and pressure Christmas can bring.

"This can be a very lonely, depressing time for people," said Beverly Randall of Mental Health America in Sheboygan County.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

The driver of the explorer was very depressed about the accident, the driver of the nissan and her passengers (two teen girls and a teen boy) were upset as well. No idea who caused the accident due to the fact that everyone was hitting their brakes pretty hard. The passengers of the mini van 7 in all (myself included) have whiplash and minor cuts and bruises.

DFO: Huckleberries Online first reported this accident, off the police scanner, at 11:32 a.m. Thursday here. I appreciate Angel's update -- and that she's all right. Indeed, online community journalism adds a dimension that the dead-tree media rarely ever does: eyewitness reports from survivors of what would be dismissed as "minor" accidents. When you're involved, there are no minor accidents.

Ex High-Flying UK Banker Launches TV For Addicts

A former London banker whose cocaine addiction cost him his high-flying job and nearly destroyed his marriage has created Britain's first television channel to help addicts and their families.

Dan Butcher, 34, from Berkshire, developed an addiction that left him suicidal while running a foreign exchange trading desk at a firm in London's financial district known as the "City."

"If I didn't have a wife and children I would have killed myself," he told Reuters in an interview. "If they weren't around, I wouldn't be here."

At his lowest point, he was taking up to 300 pounds worth of cocaine a day and was arrested for possession after visiting his dealer.

The last few days before he sought help were spent alone in a hotel room, drinking vodka and taking cocaine around the clock without sleeping or eating.
